Art & Design

Intent

At St. Andrew’s, we aim to develop children's knowledge and understanding of artists and art styles while providing opportunities to explore a wide range of mediums. Our Art and Design curriculum is designed to give children the confidence to experiment, invent, and create their own works of art, nurturing their creative thinking skills and individual expression. Through a variety of topics, students develop different techniques and styles, both inside and outside the classroom, and apply their ICT skills to gain new perspectives. We believe that art, craft, and design are vital components of our curriculum, encouraging self-expression and creativity. Our curriculum opens up what art is by providing diverse opportunities and experiences, underpinned by the creative use of drawing and sketchbooks across all subjects. Art at the primary level builds confidence, fosters a sense of individual identity, and enhances wellbeing and happiness.

Implementation

At St. Andrew’s, our Art curriculum is designed in alignment with the National Curriculum to ensure a comprehensive and enriching educational experience for our pupils. Art is taught through a series of carefully planned units that progress in complexity, building on previous knowledge and skills. Each term, students explore different artists, art styles, and media, allowing them to experiment and develop their unique creative expression.

Our lessons are structured to include a balance of practical, hands-on activities and theoretical learning, ensuring students understand both the creative process and the context of their work. We use sketchbooks to record our work in art lessons.

Through a variety of artists, students are encouraged to develop their skills, with a strong emphasis on creativity, critical thinking, and imagination. Our approach ensures that children not only learn about art but also through art, applying their skills across the curriculum and in their daily lives.

Our curriculum provides opportunities for students to experiment and explore art. This holistic approach to teaching art not only adheres to the National Curriculum objectives but also aims to cultivate a lifelong appreciation and passion for the arts.

Impact

We aim for pupils to have learnt, improved, and embedded a diverse range of artistic skills. They will have an awareness of a broad spectrum of artists and craftspeople and be able to thoughtfully consider and discuss various artworks. We want our pupils to feel confident in exploring, experimenting, and taking risks, placing value on the creative process and journey, not just the finished product. Most importantly, we aspire for our pupils to discover and enjoy a creative outlet that serves as a means of self-expression and personal enjoyment.
