Music

Intent

Here at St. Andrew’s we believe that music has an important role in our community particularly as we are a Church of England school and attend services including singing regularly throughout the year. Children have many opportunities to take part in musical activities which allows them to express themselves creatively and in a way that is different to other subjects. Studying music allows children to build many transferable skills including language, reasoning, pattern-finding and creating, memory, listening, teamwork, creativity, responsible risk-taking and resilience. The teaching of music allows children with a different learning styles a chance to flourish. It also enables children opportunities which they might not otherwise have.  

The aspiration for our pupils is that they have ample opportunities to express themselves musically and have a solid foundation on which to develop their musical skills and understanding.

Implementation

Music is embedded within our day to day activities here at St. Andrew’s. The children enjoy weekly singing assemblies where they learn new songs as well as practising songs which will be performed at events such Harvest, Christmas and Easter services.

Each lesson is taught using the Charanga scheme of work which follows the national curriculum and builds on skills and understanding. More information can be found out here.

There are also opportunities for extra-curricular music learning. We have a choir which meet once a week and learn songs which the children enjoy. There are chances for the choir to perform throughout the year (such as at our Christmas Fair).

We also take part in national choir initiatives such as Young Voices and Voice in a Million. These are a fabulous and exciting opportunity for our children to be part of and are thoroughly enjoyed by all who take part, teachers included!

Impact  

Every child should be able to:

• find the pulse of a song and be able to copy back simple rhythms and sung sentences accurately.
• enjoy music and be able to perform and express themselves musically both in a group or individually.
• build character and resilience through learning instruments and composition.
• know about global musical styles, musicians and influences giving reasons for enjoying or not enjoying different songs and genres.
